What is the increase in volume V of a rectangular box if its width is doubled, its length is tripled and its height quadrupled? (a) 23V (b) 8V (c) 9V (d) 16V (e) 12V

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you are ever confused by a problem like this try it with numbers, and make them easy suppose you had a square with each side 1, then the volume would be \(1^3=1\) as well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now double one side to get 2, triple one side to get 3 and quadruple the height to get 4 new volume is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 24 but that's not an answer choice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then there is a mistake because that is what it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

unless by "increase" they mean \(24V-V=23V\) but that is downright silly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

The question asks for the "increase", not how many times as large. To get to 24 times as large from the original volume of V, you must add 23V.
