what is excitation potential? It's potential or energy? If the energy levels in eV of a hypothetical one electron atom are given by: E= -18.0/n^2 where n= 1,2,3 ......... what is the excitation potential of the state n=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just subs the Value of n =2 E= -18.0/n^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is excitation potential and ionisation potential same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

esciattion means just send electron to higher level.. ionisation means take out the electron..which is more than excitation...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in this case: answer is energy needed to send the electron fron n=2 to n=3. right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea..just take out the difference b/w the 2 reuired levels....

thanks
