(y^2-y-12)/(y^2-6y+8) by (y^2+2y-15)/(y^2-7y+10) simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

factor everything

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the thing, i dont understand the whole concept of factoring, would you mind giving me an example please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well do (y^2-y-12), first thing youll do is find the factors of 12, two of these factors when added or subtracted will equal -1since you have a negative y in the middle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the factors of 12 are , 1 and 12, 2 and 6, 3 and 4 .... i see that 4-3 will give me the negative 1 i need so ill use that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so you would factor each section in the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well hold on the easiest way for me to explain it is with a picture your familiar with the foil method right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that is familiar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so were just making that your answer for the first one (y^2-y-12) is (y-4)(y+3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so i think i got it, i was factoring the others ones when i finally understood what you told me, we got the first one, so would (y^2-6y+8) = (y+4)(y+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no since we have a negative 6 in the middle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would just be (y-4)(y-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so you would just change the addition sign to subtraction, alright so this is what i got for the rest of them (y-4)(y+3)/(y-4)(y-2) by (Y-3)(Y+5)/(y-5)(y-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct, now cancel out anything you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually first tell me what you mean (y-4)(y+3)/(y-4)(y-2) ???by??? (Y-3)(Y+5)/(y-5)(y-2), are you multiplying these?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do not know, in my problem it says use complete problems to simplify the expression, so no there is no mulitplying them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw i got (y-3)2/(y-2)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im just confused by what you mean by the word "by" is this division or multiplication

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is division, i just re read over the problem and it say show all work in dividing, then it gives me the equation i gave you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so youll have (y+3)/(y-2) * (y-5)(y-2)/(y-3)(y+5) you got this right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that would be the final answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cancel out anything you can then that will be your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got (y+3)(y-5)/(y-3)(y+5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont undertand how you got that....wouldn't you cancel out the (y+5) with the (y-5)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you can only cancel out same factors

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@panlac01 can u help out i have to leave for a few
