why oxygen is needed in cellular respiration?

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

@girl03

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

also to accept the protons that move down the ATPase pump

thanks 4 the great answer:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in cellular respiration glucose is converted to pyruvate by glycolysis and the pyruvate enters krebs cycle where the NADH and FADH molecules and CO2 are produced..then electrons are transported by ETC...during electron transport chain(ETC) the electrons from reduced NADH and FADH move along the chain through different cytochrome complexes, and finally it gets accepted by oxygen(terminal acceptor)....for aerobes like us ,oxygen is required as it acts as the terminal acceptor.....in case of anaerobes which donot essentially require oxygen have other acceptors like sulphates,nitrates...

thank u kalp:)

~Oxygen is needed for the Krebs Cycle to operate. Without this, only lactate can be produced from glucose (anaerobic respiration) yielding about 1/10 of the energy.

thank u MayGirl:)
