An image of an ice cream cone is shown below. The slant height of the cone itself is 4 inches, and the radius of the ice cream scoop on top is 0.5 inches. What is the approximate surface area of the entire ice cream cone with the scoop of ice cream? 0.5π square inches 2.5π square inches 2.75π square inches 2.25π square inches

OpenStudy (mathmate):

If you assume that the exposed ice cream scoop is a hemisphere, the surface area of a hemisphere is \[ A_h\ =\ 2 \pi r^2 \] The area of the cone surface is, similar to the previous problem, \[ A_c \ = \ \pi r L \] where \[ L\ = \ slant\ height\ of\ cone\ (4\ inches)\] The total surface area is then \[ Area \ = \ A_h + A_c \]

OpenStudy (mathmate):

As usual, r=0.5" L=4" pi = 3.1416

no idea

Substitute the values of r, L and pi into the above equations and you'd get your answer.
