What are the necessary conditions for nationalism to develop?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess it depends on how extreme you want to be with it. Sometimes nationalism can be as simple as saying that you are proud for being part of a particular nation as a sense of belonging, that you consider it your home and your place in the world. Having a nation and being a part of that nation can often be very powerful things, especially if you didn't have any nation to call home in the first place. Other times it can also be taken to extremes in terms of fascism which place the good of the nation and its pride above everything else - including other people - usually after that nation has suffered tremendous hardships. Examples of that include Fascist Italy and Germany in the years leading up to and including World War II. Germany, for example, suffered extreme hardships after losing the first World War and were humiliated by the treaty that came afterwards. Hitler and his followers took advantage of this to muscle their way to the top by promising to restore the pride of the nation and its place in the world once again. That was a very appealing platform to run on and many believed that he would actually do it, often by ignoring the darker side to his politics and strongarm tactics.

Can you put this in a short version? It's for a report..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Shared things like culture, history, and language are the major drivers for nationalism - a sense that everyone like you belong together in a nation. The danger is when it can become an extreme form of nationalism - like fascism - which believes that your nation is superior to all others even if that means other people.
