OpenStudy (beth12345):

in algebra, how can you tell when x =/= (cannot be equal to) a number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can tell, because, when \(x=n\) (your number), then the expression is not true.

OpenStudy (beth12345):

in one of my question \[(3x-2)/(x-5) = 2\] i got the answer -8 and then my teacher said to also write down that x=/=5, but i dont really understand why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, that is because, if \(x=5\), then we have division by zero, which is undefined.

OpenStudy (beth12345):

oh ok

OpenStudy (beth12345):

so in the question \[((x-1)(x-6))/ (x+2) =12\] would i say that x=/=-2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep.

OpenStudy (beth12345):

k thank you
