I already did #1, but I need help for #2 and possibly 3 and 4. I don't get how it relates to hydrogen bonding and polarity. For #1 is t maybe something about the molecules and bonds being tighter together using polarity or something? Gah. "Using words and pictures, Explain 1. Cohesion allows water to travel up a tree 2. Density allows animals to live under ice 3. Polarity dissolves ionic substances 4. Heat capacity prevents large temp. changes • Include how polarity and/or hydrogen bonds contribute to each."
Wow that was bad typing...
Like cohesion and adhesion; Hydrogen bonding and all that jazz, so I would say yes.
I think Ive seen an animation of this b4... yeah, I remember :)
ionic compound are polar in nature......and like dissolves in like...means polar compounds dissolve in polar solvents only....
For #2, consider that water has one really unusual density-related property: like most liquids, it usually gets denser as it gets colder (this means that in summer, you get a layer of relatively cold water at the bottom and warmer water above it), BUT it reaches a maximum density at 4°C, and after that, it actually becomes less dense, even when it freezes (at 0°C). This is what allows ice to float on top of a pond instead of piling up at the bottom.
