Depends on the polynomial.
First, you would want to factor out the GCF from each term.
After that, it would depend on the degree of the polynomial and how many terms it had. It might be factorable into a particular form, or it might be a prime number.

Given y3+y-5y^2-5 you can factor y from the first two terms and -5 from the last two terms. Try that and see what you get.
Usually, when you see a polynomial with four terms, you'll want to try that factor-by-grouping trick first.
