Anyone know how to put this fraction in lowest terms? 2/12 + 3/17 Please explain, I have no idea how to do this!
You need to find a common denominator before you can add the fractions. Notice that 2/12 is not in lowest terms, so reduce it to 1/6. Then you need to find a common denominator for 6 and 17. In this case, the easiest way to do this is to multiply 6 x 17 = 102. Now, 1/6 = ?/102? The result is 17/102. Now do the same thing for the other fraction, 3/17 . 3/17 = ?/102 . When you get your "new" numerator, you then can add this to 17. Your denominator will be 102. Remember, do not add denominators, just add numerators when their denominators are the same. Now look at your answer. Is it in lowest terms? Can you divide both numerator and denominator by the same number? If not then your fraction is in simplest terms.
