what is (-6x²-3x³+4)+(-7x³+2x+4)-(-3x³+5x²+2) thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi. do you still need some help with this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. I think we can get rid of the problem pretty quickly. are you ready?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start by making sure the polynomials in parentheses are in descending order.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the first set of terms should be -3x^3-6x^2+0x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gotcha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

notice the 0x term as a placeholder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now just like you would put double or triple digit addends in a position to add them vertically, i would like you to align like powers of x with their respective coefficients in descending powers of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

align them vertically so that the x^3 terms are in one column and the x^2 terms are in the next and so on. Feel free to ask any questions. Like maybe about the parenthetical terms with the minus sign in front :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now notice that the last set of terms in parentheses has a minus sign in front. so you need to use the definition of subtraction and distribute that minus sign onto all 3 terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this way you are dealing constantly with that pesky minus sign. you will simply be adding the coefficients of like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooops.. this way you NOT constantly dealing with that pesky minus sign. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now, add you x^3 terms vertically and tell me what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7x^3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your coefficients are the sum of -6 and -7 and 3. So what is that sum?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the compliments. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6+-7=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ur welcome andddddd -13. i was subtracting instead of adding :/ lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is understandable. now add 3 to -13 and this is the coefficient of your x^3 term.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still there terrina?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am going to help some other people. you can send me a message if you want to continue. Take care

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am sooooooooo sorry i had to take out the trash :/
