complete the square x2+2x=3

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Get all terms on one side. \[x^2+2x-3=0\] Now lets think. Hmm. We need factors of (-3) that add/subtract to give us (2). 3x1=3 Hmm those are the only multiples of 3. So we KNOW that those are the ones we're going to be working with So we can set up our binomials with those 2 terms. (x 3)(x 1)=0 But what signs? which one should be positive which one negative? Both positive? Both Negative? Hmmmm you tell me sam! :D

zepdrix (zepdrix):

ok sam sleeping? :P anyway :D it would look like this (x+3)(x-1)=0
