Find equation of line through (3, 2); perpendicular to the line y = 4. Help please

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Anything perpendicular to y = 4 will be equations like x = 1, x =2, x = 3, etc

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which equation goes through (3,2)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

doesn't say, just says to find an equation that satisfies the given condition

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is the x coordinate of (3,2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

all points that are on x = 1 have an x coordinate of 1, so the line x = 1 does NOT go through (3,2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right so it would be x=3 as answer...and that should go through y=4 no?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x = 3 is the answer since all points on this line have an x coordinate of 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got you, thanks. I was trying to some how use y=4 with the formula y-y1=m(x-x1) lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that formula won't work because the slope m is undefined for vertical lines

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and x = 3 is a vertical line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah okay
