What is the solution set of |4x - 3| - 2 > 3? x < -0.5 or x > 8 x < 0.5 or x > 8 x < -0.5 or x > 2 x < -2 or x > 2

OpenStudy (nubeer):

there is mod sign in ur question that means u would have two values of x. to find those values u need 2 equations.. set ur question like this (4x-3) - 2 > 3 & -(4x-3) - 2 > 3 can u do it from here now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would i have to add the 2 and get--> 4x-3>5 ? Im not really sure what else i am supposed to do..?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, your that step is correct add 2 to get 4x-3>5 as 1st equation to solve this, add 3 to both sides,so that you can isolate x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x>8 ?

hartnn (hartnn):

yup, so x> ??

hartnn (hartnn):

divide by 4

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

|4x - 3| - 2 > 3 if you add two to both sides we have |4x-3| > 5 does not imply 4x-3>5

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

does it???

hartnn (hartnn):

it does, its just that u get 2 equation as @nubeer explained, and u need to solve both of them

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

Oh sorry I was only looking at that one post...

hartnn (hartnn):

so @badATalgebra u have 4x>8 divide by 4 on both sides, what u have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x > 2 ?

hartnn (hartnn):

yup, thats correct!

hartnn (hartnn):

now take the 2n equation and try to solve that -(4x-3) - 2 > 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4x - 3 > 5 -4x > 8 would this one be -2 then?

hartnn (hartnn):

nopes. -(4x-3) = -4x + 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x > -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4x + 3 > 5 ? -4x > 2 x > - .5

hartnn (hartnn):

remember this tip: when you multiply or divide by negative quantity , u FLIP the sign so., -4x>2 gives x<-0.5 ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmm, okay, I get everything else ill just have to remember that. Thanks you really helped me!!

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
