what are inequalities?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inequalities are just equations that are not equal. for example if you have 5x+3=9 just change this to 5x+3>9 (5x+3 is greater than 9). you solve the inequality the same way as an equation w/the exception of division i believe. in this case you switch the sign (to less than in this case)---

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Any expression with \[< > \le or \ge \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not division that flips the sign, it's division by a negative amount

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so how would I do this? 4x < 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x > 5? is the answer i got but im not completely sure, So what I did was divide each side by 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you know to divide each side by 4? Can you please explain the entire process?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can try, Ok lets start with taking the given equation 4x > 20 so you take the four, and what we are doing is trying to solve for x. so we divide each side by the four . so 4 divided by 4 = 1x or just..x and 20 divided by 4 = 5. ________________________ now since theres division you have to flip the sign o: which is how I ended up with x > 5? questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok i think I've got it now, but can you check this answer for the next one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4x < 20 = ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah np, -4x < 20 = (well its basically kinda the same as the last one but I believe this is where you have to flip the greater than/less than sign so it would look like -x > -5
