Your softball team is ordering equipment from a catalog. Each bat costs $42. The cost of shipping is $12 no matter how much you order. a) Write an expression showing the cost of purchasing b bats from this catalog. b) Calculate the cost of ordering 10 new bats from this catalog.

Ok... An expression needs some variables... how about C is the overall cost that you want to find.... B = the cost per bat, and S = the cost of shipping.

How much does 1 bat cost? How about 2 bats? In general, if I tell you a certain number of bats, how much is the cost of bats (not counting shipping)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 bat costs $42 2 bats cost $84 = 2 x 42 3 bats cost $126 = 3 x 42 so... B bats cost B x ($42)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. the expression= 42x+ 12 b.let x=10---->42(10)+12=432

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But no matter how many bats B you order, you also have to pay S for the shipping... So your overall cost C is the sum of the cost of bats plus the cost of shipping C = 42B + 12

@yeahyeah so, now you have someone handing you the answer, but hopefully you also get the explanation for how you write the expression... good luck!! :)
