The temperature was 65 degrees at daybreak. Then it dropped two degrees per hour until dusk. If x is the number of hours since daybreak, this equation represents the temperature during the day: y = -2x + 65 OR y = 65 - 2x. Use the equation to predict the temperature six hours later.

if x is the number of hours since daybreak .. what do you have to plug into x in order to predict the temperature six hours after daybreak ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

substitution x = 6 in the equation. X here indicates the variable per hours. Since the initial temperature was 65 and the reduced 2 per hour, then for the first 1 hour 65-2.1 = 63, for the next 2 hours 65-2.2 = 61, and so on. Because in the question is 6 hours later, you just replace x with 6.
