Estimate the product: 2.45 . 6.8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you want just the answer or work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answere

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16.66

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you understand how to get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it has 1 5 14 and 24 so beep wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

key word: estimate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so 15.14 then if its estimate, but that looks wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will let kewlgeek555 figure it out

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

14.7 is the answer. To estimate you have to round. Is 14.7 closest to 15 or 14?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because he knows what i am talking about

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.45 is NEAR 2.5 6.8 is NEAR 7 You could estimate the answer as 2.5 x 7 You could even estimate it as 2 x 7 or as 3 x 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

probably cause you guys are cheating

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope!!

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Oops. It is 16.66. That is closest to 17.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

The answer should be 17.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so your better than them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly it is 16.66 so 17 rounded

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

yeppers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's not how they teach them to estimate answers... you don't solve first then round, you round first then multiply. It's less precise, but it is a tool for getting a general order of magnitude answer... Ex) "about how much will our restaurant dinner cost?" Estimate each meal price quickly, multiply by number of people... etc.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Oh...that could be it.

OpenStudy (biffo):

Guys! To make an estimate, you don't calculate the exact answer and then round it. Er, what you do is round the parts you're dealing with and get a rough answer. So 2.5 x 7 was good. How about 17.5 or round that a bit?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can round 2.45 down to 2 round 6.8 up to 7 Multiply 2 x 7 to get 14. Yes, it's several off from the true answer, but it is an estimate...

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Okay, okay. Sorry @FLUFFYKITTY if we are confusing you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.5 x 7 is really good, but the answer isn't one of the ones @FLUFFYKITTY has to choose from.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

JakeV8 is right.

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

It's that I don't "estimate" answers anymore. I am in eighth grade, and I do more complicated things.

OpenStudy (biffo):

So, from the given options, it has to be 14. Round one of your starting numbers up, the other down and Bob's your uncle. (Sorry -- I missed the specific answer choices the first time.)

OpenStudy (biffo):

(The option of 15, by the way, although closest to the correct answer, is a red herring. If you're using any sensible estimating method, you don't come up with 15, even though it's closer.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good points @Biffo

OpenStudy (biffo):

Thx, Jake
