Help me check my slope question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Write the equation of a line (in slope intercept form) that is perpendicular to y=1/4x-6 that passes through the poin (6,4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I MEAN 1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=1/2x-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So... isn't that already slope intercept form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm really confused...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the slope intercept form of the line it is perpendicular to. you're trying to find the other line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, I have to reciprocal it?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

What is the slope of y = 1/4x-6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH. I see nao.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pshhh.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it becomes y=-1/2-6 correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, you have to take the slope, reciprocal it and change the sign, and then use that plus the point you have to find the equation of the other line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh wait. I'm a derp. I just realized that :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-4=-2(x-6) yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct, not distribute the -2 and after that add the 4 to both sides and you're done

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=-2x+16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How can that be right when the slope of the given line is 1/4 and so the slope of the perpendicular is -4???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

She said that was a typo, changed it to 1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you're done. answer is y=-2x+16
