B. Translate the following phrases into algebraic expressions. Explain, in complete sentences, the difference between the two. (3 points) twice the sum of x and y the sum of twice x and y

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

need help

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

anyone?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um ok let me try to help yu ok i'm going to do my best

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

k...

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

have you gotten anything yet daish?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i'ma need to get someone to help yu on this cuz i'm goin to be real idk this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok lets concentrate on the 1st one. Read it as two parts-"twice the...(something)" & "..sum of x & y"

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

ok

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

2xy for the first part?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sum of x&y= x+y.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

thats the first part?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, sum of x&y= x+y. So, twice the sum of x&y= 2(x+y). Get it?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, the second one now. Three parts-"the sum of" , "twice x" & "y". twice x= 2x. Therefore, the sum of twice x & y is... 2x+y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you get it?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

kinda

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok which part do you find kinda confusing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i suggest reading my reply again slowly though..

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

all.. so what would i do for the complete sentenes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know what they expect you to write but don't you see that 2(x+y) & 2x+y are completely different?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let's clear up the second one, shall we? how you should answer these questions: as you read "the sum of", you ask yourself "ok, the sum of what?" then, you read further & go "oh twice x is nothing but 2x" & you write 2x down. You go on & read "and y" & you think "ok the sum of 2x & y -- that is 2x+y. So the answer is 2x+y."

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

would (2x+y) mean the same thing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :)

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

k... now i still dont know bout the sentences
