How could you prove or disprove that a specific solute, such as sucrose, was able to diffuse through a semipermeable membrane?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

what kind of membrane are we talking bout?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a general semi permeable membrane (:

It would be great if you could help answer. I really have to go right now, but I will be back tomorrow to get more help with the rest of my project. Thanks again! and sorry for leaving so soon

OpenStudy (aaronq):

thats okay, maybe provide a bit more background, as semipermeable membranes differ, usually were talking about lipid membranes which are only permeable to non-polar molecules (sucrose is polar thus it needs to permeate through pinocytosis, facilitated transport, etc...) (polar molecules diffuse too, but really REALLY slowly, and only up to a certain size..)

OpenStudy (aaronq):

look up "partition coefficient"
