3(y – 5) + 2 = 5 y = 4 y = 7 y = –4 y = 6
Someone just asked this about five minutes ago. To solve this you need to test the possible y's to see which satisfies the equation. I.E. plug in 4 for y, then try 7, and keep going until the left side of the equation equals the right.
For example, plug in 4. You get 3(4-5)+2 . 4-5 is negative 1. 3*(-1) is -3. -3+2=-1. Since -1 does not equal 5, then we know y=4 is not the answer.
Give the other options a try. This is rather simple computation, and it is good practice. If you are getting stuck on something go ahead and ask. But remember, this is a place for getting help, not getting people to do your work for you.
Nice work, you got it! 6-5 is 1. 3*1 is 3, +2 is 5. Since 5 definitely =5, then y=6 is correct.
