Identify the predicate nominative in the following sentence. As a freshman, the place kicker earned a place on the varsity team and became player of the year. A. freshman B. kicker C. team D. player **the answer is either B. kicker or D. player right? please explain!! i'm a bit confused on this one... thanks! :)
because the freshman is a 'kicker,' which renames him... but becoming a 'player' renames him also... idk help please?
I think it is player in this case.
it is player?? can u pls explain?? cuz i couldn't figure out between the two....
In order for it to be an option, it has to be in the predicate portion of the sentence @iheartfood. Make sure the word is in the predicate first, before deciding.
i'm Still confused :(
For one, it has to come after the verb, for two, it has to be something which the subject can be or become
and what do u mean by the predicate portion?
the verb is 'became' ???
ohhh and the freshman BECAME a PLAYER ??? (all caps are meant to be italicized.... not in place for shouting!) lol sorry had to mention that :)
@iheartfood, is the word "kicker" in the subject or predicate portion of the sentence? Subject portion of the sentence: As a freshman, the place kicker Predicate portion of the sentence: earned a place on the varsity team and became player of the year. Notice that "kicker" is in the subject portion of the sentence. Also the verbs are earned and become
its is NOT in the predicate portion... so because of that, my answer is D. player ?? :) because of what was said above? and it HAS to be in the predicate portion? :) so my answer is D. player ?? :D
The only nouns in the predicate are: place, team, player, and year.
We can eliminate place and year, because they don't make sense.
ohhh okay :) and that makes my answer D. player because player substitutes for freshman, the subject, and is in the predicate portion?? is that right?
Team also can be eliminated because he isn't the whole team, he just has a place on it
kicker is the subject, not freshman. You have to eliminate introductory phrases as well before analyzing
mhmm and since kicker is NOT in the predicate portion, my answer is D. player did i get that right? :)
ohhh i see @hero :) and player substitutes for kicker, making the predicate nominative, D. player
yes?? :D
Now you have it finally :P
