The following sentence may have an error in grammar or usage. Parts of the sentence are *starred*. Choose the *starred* part of the sentence that contains an error. If there is no error, choose no error. Please *stack the dishes*, *from largest to smallest*, in the kitchen *in the cabinet.* A. stack the dishes, B. from largest to smallest, C. in the cabinet. D. no error ***i am not quite sure what the mistake is... please explain? :) thank you!

hero (hero):

I object to that statement

hero (hero):

Since when do you say stack some dishes in the kitchen in the cabinet?

hero (hero):

I'm pretty sure that if I said it, I would say, "Stack the dishes in the kitchen cabinet".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess so , but your sentence doesn't have a choice so I would go with letter C.

hero (hero):

Now you're changing your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please *stack the dishes*, *from largest to smallest*, *in the cabinet*, in the kitchen. This should be the correct answer.

hero (hero):

There is definitely a usage error. Even people who talk slang don't jack up a sentence that bad.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait i am confused... so what is the answer and why??

hero (hero):

My mother is horrible at English and I don't ever remember her saying to stack some dishes in the kitchen in the cabinet. I'm sorry but there is a usage error here and I believe the error is called over-bloating sentence.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol like a run on sentence?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol @hero and ur example :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i kinda see what you mean. It is very descriptive... but it is telling which cabinet... the one in the kitchen. idk man

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would the error be C. in the cabinet. like if you take it away would this make sense?? please stack the dishes, from smallest to largest, in the kitchen. ?? idk :/

hero (hero):

No, not run-on, but I guess an English teacher would probably mention something about redundancy or impreciseness.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes @iheartfood

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would make sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay sooo my answer is C. in the cabinet??

hero (hero):

Well, actually, to completely eliminate cabinet would not be wise. That would mean you could stack the dishes anywhere you wanted in the kitchen.

hero (hero):

How about on the kitchen floor?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh then i have no idea... :( and @hero lol :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you think the answer is then y'all?? and why?? :)

hero (hero):

I would pick c as a usage error since using two prep phrases back to back like that appears redundant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think this is a case of a misplace modifier...and to correct it, it should be letter C. and Please *stack the dishes*, *from largest to smallest*, *in the cabinet*, in the kitchen. This should be the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome :) thank you!!! :D yay! so answer C it is!! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and can someone please give @countonme123 a medal?? i can only give one :(

hero (hero):

@countonme123, it makes no difference if you switch them, it is still redundancy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone can give anyone a medal...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it is just being extra specific

hero (hero):

Actually, I'm going to check with an expert on this, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok...lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iheartfood also check this... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091003170632AAd1irJ notice the same answer...

hero (hero):

Wow countonme, is that your profile on yahoo answers. Someone must think just like you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol that's not me I swear.

hero (hero):

Well, sadly, the expert agrees with me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh well... he is probably biased.

hero (hero):

How? I mentioned nothing about my answer to her when she saw the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha thanks y'all!! :D can u pls help with my next one? :D i posted it already :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. well good for you..anyways we both said C haha...

hero (hero):

NO you said D at first, then changed to C.
