suppose there are 8 roads connecting town A to town B and 5 roads connecting town B to town C. In how many ways can a person travel from A to C via B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as there are eight roads there are eight options to get to town b. there are five options to get to town c. therefore you must do 8 (original options a - b) * 5 (options b-c)

I do no understand the formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok sorry,a - b means the road from town a to b b - c means the road from town b to c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

another way to think about it it there are 8 ways to get to the first road of b to c there are eight ways to get to the second road of b to c and so on until the fifth road of b to c so you have 5 lots of 8 options thus 5*8

ok i think i understand. thank you
