Write the equation of a line in slope-intercept form passing through (4, 5) and (6, 8): a. y=3/2x+1 b.y=3/2x-1 c. y=2/3x-1 d. y=-3/2+11

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

Slope is rise over run. In other words, it's the change in y over the change in x. So first go ahead and find the slope, and then we'll work on the rest.

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

@Ryan06202011, are you there? Can you calculate the slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry I was answering someone elses question, I cant calculate the slope

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

Do you know the formula for slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its been awhile since i actually went to school. Everything is a blur to me

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

You know that every point is (x, y) right? So given the two points in your question what is change from the first y to the second y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

Slope is the ratio of rise to run. The rise is the change in the y-coordinates, and the run is the change in the x-coordinates. For example if two points are (-2, 1) and (-3, 5), then the the change in y is +4 because the y increases by 4 units from the first y to the second. Similarly, the change in x is -1 because the x decreases by 1 unit from the first x to the second. Do you understand my example?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

So in the example I just gave you. the slope would be\[\frac{ +4 }{ -1 }=-4\]Do you understand?
