The Soccer Boosters club sells hotdogs and hamburgers at the games to raise funds for the soccer team. Chili Cheese Hotdogs sell for $3.00 and hamburgers sell for $2.50. At the game last week 175 people purchased a chili cheese hotdog or hamburger and exactly $480 was collected. How many of each was sold?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this sounds like 2 equations, 2 unknowns... You can set up an equatin for the number of purchases total ( = 175), and a 2nd equation for the amount of money collect ( = $480)

2 unknowns, is where i was stuck at

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, let's call the number of people purchasing chili cheese dogs C and the number buying hamburgers, H So H + C = 175 people does that sound right?

i follow now, i see where i got confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You still need a second equation... one that uses the $480 information. sales mean $3 per chili dog and $2.50 per hamburger. So 3C is the amount of money for C people who bought dogs and 2.50H is the amount of money for the H people who bought hamburgers and the total amount of money from both is $480.
