OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

there are five people in an elevator in a six storey building. What is the probability that each person gets off the elevator on unique storeys of the building?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

it's not that simple....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6*6*6*6*6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6^5 = 7776

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

no idea where you got that solution....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 6P5 }{ 6^{5} }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6P5/6^5

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

oohh so close...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5P5/5^5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, I hope to learn something new today, given the chance that all the people got off at different stories, wanted to go to different rooms, had to go down or up, I'd say that it would look something like... ah, and theres only 5 people so...P=people F+Floor X: starting place Y: Ending place Y=(5f)...and I do not know what dodo from there.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

that's a bit complicated @HyperChemist ....

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

@pathosdebater why so?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, Y=((5f)-x)5

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

why put in algebra...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if you count the floor they all get into the elevator on, then there are only 5 other floors left.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, for me it helps...Hoe else could I write it so?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

so why didn't we get that solution in the first place?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess your right it only complicates things for me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The problem statement specifies that there are 6 stories, so there are 6 other floors to go. Therein lies the misunderstanding...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to include all 6 floors. It doesn't say that some weirdo can't ride the elevator up to the top then back down to the first and gets back off.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly... So, 6P5/6^5

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

........logical....but doesn't make sense......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right! its all about probability, forget the relativity of the problem

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

that's actually illegal and unethical in a lot of countries

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not in America!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good answer! lets not get more into politics now...
