Okay, let's talk about conjugating verbs in the present-tense. When we conjugate verbs, we have to pay attention to the ending of the verb. Spanish verbs can end in three different ways: 1. AR 2. ER 3. IR I'm gonna explain how to conjugate verbs, with each of these endings, using examples. ~~~~~~~~~~~ First is AR. And for this example, I'm going to use HABLAR. (To speak) We always take off the ending of the verb, first. So, take off AR, and we now have HABL. Now, we add new endings, depending on what we want to say. Here's the list of new words that we can create, from HABL: (Yo) HABLO -- (I) Speak (Tú) HABLAS -- (You) Speak (Él/Ella/Usted) HABLA -- (He/She/You (formal)) Speaks (Nosotros) HABLAMOS -- (We) Speak (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) HABLAN -- (They/You (plural)) Speak So, you see here, we take HABL.... and we can add different endings: O, AS, A, AMOS, AN... And the new endings change the subject of the verb. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, let's talk about ER verbs. And for this example, I'm going to use COMER. (To eat) Once more, we always take the ending off, first. So, take off ER, and we now have COM. Now, we can add new endings, depending on what we want to say. Here's the list of new words that we can create, from COM: (Yo) COMO -- (I) Eat (Tú) COMES -- (You) Eat (Él/Ella/Usted) COME -- (He/She/You (formal)) Eats (Nosotros) COMEMOS -- (We) Eat (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) COMEN -- (They/You (plural)) -- Eat So, you see here, we take COM, and we add on different endings: O, ES, E, EMOS, EN ~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, let's talk about IR verbs. And for this example, I'm going to use ESCRIBIR. (To write) Once again, we take off the ending first. So, take off IR, and we now have ESCRIB Now, we can add new endings, depending on what we want to say. Here's the list of new words that we can create, from ESCRIB: (Yo) ESCRIBO -- (I) Write (Tú) ESCRIBES -- (You) Write (Él/Ella/Usted) ESCRIBE -- (He/She/You (formal)) -- Writes (Nosotros) ESCRIBIMOS -- (We) Write (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) ESCRIBEN -- (They/You (plural)) Write So, you see here, we take ESCRIB, and we add on different endings: O, ES, E, IMOS, EN Do you see how conjugating IR verbs is very similar to conjugating ER verbs? All of the ending changes are the same, EXCEPT for the Nosotros form. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, you might be wondering what "Usted" means. "Usted" is how we address someone in a formal way. It's a formal way of saying "you." So, for instance, when you are talking to someone like your teacher, you would say... "Usted come." It means, "You eat." We wouldn't say "Tú comes." It's too informal. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, remember that we are only talking about the present tense here. There are some verbs that translate into the YO form, a little differently than we normally do it. For instance, PONER means "to put." And when we want to say "I put," we would say, "Yo PONGO." We wouldn't say "Yo pono." That'd be incorrect. And here are a few more YO irregulars, just for starters: Decir -- Yo DIGO Hacer -- Yo HAGO Tener -- Yo TENGO Salir -- Yo SALGO Ser -- Yo SOY Ir -- Yo VOY Venir -- Yo VENGO Conocer -- Yo CONOZCO Saber -- Yo SÉ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We're only talking about how to conjugate verbs in the present tense, here. There are many, many different tenses. If you have any questions about the present tense, please ask. I could show you a special tutorial on how to conjugate the verb IR (to go). And if you ever think you're ready to learn how to conjugate verbs into other tenses, please ask!
