what is the difference from a polar compound and a non polar compound ?

This website should help you out if you need further explanation. Basically, it is due to an unequal sharing of electrons in a molecule. An example is water, which is polar because there is an unequal sharing between the Hydrogen and Oxygen. This means that the electrons that are being shared between oxygen and each hydrogen are not even, so the electrons will be pulled closer to the Oxygen. Each hydrogen is partial positive, and the oxygen is partial 2 negative. So ya, unequal sharing of electron causes polar. http://users.stlcc.edu/gkrishnan/polar.html
