p: The air conditioner is working. q: The basement smells moldy. Statement: ~p ∧ q
The air conditioner is not working and the basement smells moldy
Okay !
p: The air conditioner is working. q: The basement smells moldy. Statement: q → ~p
do you know what ~ means? It's negation. you reverse the statement
what about that one then??
What is the opposite of the air conditioner is working??
Its not working??
Correct so this would be... If the basement smells moldy then the air conditioner is NOT working.
Oh i get it thanks !
Wait its the same as the first one im confused !
This one is different. This is tough to explain over the cpu, but the first one was an "and" which is symbolized by the ^. For this statement to be correct both situations must be true. The second is a if then statement. We know this by the arrow. If p then ~q is a true statement if p is false and ~q can be true or false, or if p and ~q is true.
Okay i get that but here is a nother one i just dont get
Example: If you eat hemlock then you will die. If the first part is false, so you don't eat hemlock, then the whole statement is true because we cannot prove otherwise.
Let p and q represent the statements: p: Jose is running track. q: Jose is not winning the race. Express the following statement symbolically: Jose is winning the race.
Since I dont see the words if and then, or the words "and" "or" I'm going to assume it is only referring to q. and he IS winning so the answer would be ~q
track is not mentioned
