Need help with a problem involving slope-intercept equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here it is: The graph of f is perpendicular to the line whose equation is 6 x - 7 y + 21 = 0 and has the same y-intercept as this line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. first you want to get it in slope-intercept form. y=mx+b so solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right. y = 6/7x+3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And then the y-int. is y = 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, but where do I go from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry yes. the y intercept is 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, wonderful.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the slope is perpendicular to another, do you know what that means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It means that the slope of one is the negative reciprocal of the other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since you have the slope intercept form y=6/7x+3, what's the slope of this function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-7/6x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- the x, sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, that would be the perpendicular slope. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what's your y-intercept?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3. So...do I just plug -7/6 and (0,3) into y = mx + b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well...then I'll get b = 3. So...presumably the answer is y = -7/6x + 3, right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, one sec.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What if you know one point the graph passes through, as well as the x and y intercepts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like okay. Here's another problem I have to do: The graph of f passes through (-8, 4) and is perpendicular to the line that has an x-intercept of 4 and a y-intercept of -36.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know the slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! ok!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, if you have the x and y intercepts, you have 2 points.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(4,0) and (0,-36)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, so I can just do this: (-36-0)/(0-4) to find the slope, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I.e., the slope's 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, now the perpendicular slope would be what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right, do you know the formula for the standard form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like do you know how to find a function given a point and a slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh...wait...I can't just use point slope form? (i.e. y - y1 = m(x-x1))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha yeah, you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what I meant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, okay. Wonderful.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So...the answer's -1/4x+2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Apparently not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really? That's what I would have gotten.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No idea. The website we use in my class doesn't give us the answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me check the algebra.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awrighty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope is not 4. :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-36/-4=6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahhh....I always make stupid mistakes like that!! Thank you..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So do I!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, sometimes being a human and not a calculator is frustrating xp

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyway....I tried entering y - 4 = -1/6(x+8)...which is also apparently wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean...I actually entered y = -1/6x + 8/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you try solving for y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that's wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I'm supposed to enter the slope-intercept form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And alas..yes, it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm. I'm so confused.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Imagine how I feel lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

probably another algebra error on our parts. ok.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the y intercept is -36 and the x is 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(0,-36) (4,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope would be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-36-0/0-4=9!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm so sorry. I totally suck at algebra.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh....dammit!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My bad!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hate hate hate arithmetic. It's the bane of my existence

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, no, it's okay lol I should've noticed that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree honestly. I always feel like I'm walking on eggshells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so now we have y-4=-1/9(x+8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-4=-1/9x+-8/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=-1/9x-8/9+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, exactly. So...y= -1/9x + 28/9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which is...RIGHT!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jeeze. so sorry about that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No need to apologize. As I said, the fact that I didn't notice your error means I probably would've made one anyway xp

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Regardless, thank you very much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No worries. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Have a good day/night!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you too.
