There are several ways you can go about solving this. You might start by multiplying the whole first equation by 3... 5x + 3y = 7 *3 15x + 9y = 21 Then do the same thing on equation 2, but multiply it all by 5. 3x - 5y = -23 *5 15x - 25y = -115 Now you have 2 equations that both have "15x" in them: 15x + 9y = 21 15x - 25y = -115 Subtract the 2nd from the first: 15x +9y - (15x - 25y) = 21 - (-115) 34y = 136 And then you can divide by 34 to solve for y.

Multiply top by 5(5x+3y =7) = 25x +15y = 35 bottom by 3(3x-5y=-23) =9x -15y = -69 now add 34x = -34
