OpenStudy (3psilon):

A particle is traveling in a vertical circle at constant speed. One can conclude that ______ is constant A)velocity B)acceleration C) net force D) Apparent weight E) none of the above

OpenStudy (3psilon):

Why wouldn't acceleration be constant?

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

Because its direction is changing constantly!

OpenStudy (3psilon):

So what would be the correct answer?

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

I guess E

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

or C

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

Yes, it should be C!

OpenStudy (3psilon):

The answer in the book is E

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt the answer be D because the weght wouldnt change right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha oh those problems that we always end up over thinking lolz

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

It is moving in a vertical circle! So, apparent weight will change continuously! However, the 'magnitude' of acceleration is constant.. So, net force must be constant!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he just said E was the answer.. lol

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

But then i said C, after a bit of mind-work!

OpenStudy (3psilon):

lol

OpenStudy (3psilon):

I'm still confused

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

I gave you a proper explanation why it should be C (net force)!! There's no room for confusion!

OpenStudy (3psilon):

Ok! I'll see what my teacher says and i'll get back to you on that!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

net force is constantly changing direction though... so it should be E

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

yeah, the the options are bit tricky.. The magnitude of: A)velocity B)acceleration C) net force remains constant but they are all vectors and their direction don't remain constant! So, to be precise, they are not constants! Thus, the answer is 'none of the above'
