Is there really going to be a calculus group? How was that decided? Why wouldn't there be a Linear Algebra group?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

why not request a number theory group @estudier ...........

OpenStudy (compassionate):

It was decided since calculus is a much more advanced part of mathematics. However, calculus in itself will be a subset of mathematics.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Much more advanced than what? It's just a bunch of formulas and computation (leaving aside real analysis).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you want to divide up the university curriculum, then Calculus and Linear Algebra have equal weight.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then again, dividing by subject matter might be a mistake. Why not divide by beginner, intermediate and advanced (or any such gradation)?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

I agree.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i think Discrete Mathematics is just as important as Linear Algebra....it's all about wits after all....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Indeed it is however this tends to be presented more and more by computing/CS departments. Anyway, it is another reason not to divide by subject.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

We can't divide up every form of mathematics. We'll end up with a million different subjects. They'll be more segregation of groups since black and white people on a 1900's bus.

Parth (parthkohli):

I heard that, we *are* going to have little groups and parent groups too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

" little groups and parent groups" ?

Parth (parthkohli):

Pardon me, what I meant was 'child groups'.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i wonder what OSF's child group is

OpenStudy (hba):

Well We Have A Mathematics Group Which Counts For All Subs Including Calculus And Linear Algebra. So Do We Really Need To Make So Many Portions ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, so it's a subgroup, not a separate group? I still not too sure about subbing by subject....
