Another graph question I'm iffy on.... (the answer either A or D?) Which of the graphs below represent the graphical solution to the following system of equations? 3x - 4y = 32 5x + 2y = 10

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

Simply solve each equation for y, then equate the two equations to each other and solve for x, giving you the point of intersection.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know, but solving for y is my problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my not knowing of how to solve for y is my trouble

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have you solved for x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes @Coolsector

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2, 0 and 0, 5 for inserting the numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x-2y=10 if x=6,y=10 then 5x = 30 2y=20 then 30-20=10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait .. you should find only one value of x .. solving for x : 3x - 4y = 32 5x + 2y = 10 multiply the second equation by 2 : 3x-4y=32 10x + 4y = 20 add both equations : 13x = 52 x = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm writing this down if that's ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my error, I suck at math

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, it's written

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so after you find x .. you can find y by plugging x in one of the original equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a good way to check yourself is to plug it into both of the equations and see if the same value of y pops out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will try that next time :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do it now .. try and get the y value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you dont know it yet .. you just know x=4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about the y value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3(4) - 4 y = 32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3(4) = 12 12- 4 y = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand anything .. what is y if x = 4 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry i don't know.... :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please help me find y....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if we plug x =4 into the first equation : 3x - 4y = 32 we get 3 * 4 - 4y = 32 -4y = 20 y=-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

same goes for the second equation : 5x + 2y = 10 5*4 +2y = 10 2y = -10 y= -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the intersection is (4,-5) you have a graph like this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh my god thank you!!!1 i'm going to write all of this down!!!1
