At the end of a long drought, the local reservoir was at 35% capacity. After three weeks of steady rain, however, the level rose to 60% capacity. If this increase amounted to 10,000 more gallons in the reservoir, how many gallons does the reservoir hold?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It seems that 10000 gallons is 25% of the dams capacity. Agree?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25% is what fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25/100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Very correct, but if you can give me the simplest fraction the next bit is easier.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Terrific. Now remember that 4 quarters make a unit. So what will you do with the 10000 and this 4 thats just been mentioned?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if one quarter is 10000 gallons 2 quarters would be ? 3 quarters would be ? 4 quarters would be ? Still happy to divide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply. that would be 40,000?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well done you

thanks
