Many Americans were reluctant to get involved in World War I. They favored a policy of isolationism, meaning that they preferred that the U.S. government stay out of world affairs. The opposite view, internationalism, supported the U.S. taking an active role in world affairs. Even after American involvement in World War I, many Americans wanted to maintain a policy of isolationism. Do you think that a policy of isolationism is appropriate in our modern world? Do you think that is possible in our world today? Explain.

To answer this question we must look at the past use of isolationism, mainly from America after world war 1. The Americans didn't want anything to do with european or world affairs and adopted the policy of isolationism. To do this they put a high tariff on all goods being imported to protect american products from competition. In retaliation countries put a high tariff on american goods. This is important because America now mainly relied on its own manufacturing and products, while today this would be difficult for any country due to the high oil demand that many countries import from other countries around the world. Second they put a quota in place that limited the number of immigrants from other countries. This would not effect many countries as they already have a high population, so i do think that this policy could be re-introduced without many negative effects on the country. Thirdly we must examine the lack of power to prevent the rise of dictators from Europe during the 30s eg Hitler and Mussolini. Many historians believe that since America was keeping itself to itself there was room to allow these people to grow in power and eventually become strong enough to start a new world war. Today we rely on countries to try and limit the power of dictators or remove them completely eg Gaddafi. It must be asked that if the superpowers of today like the USA and russia adopted isolationism, countries with dictatorship governments could grow powerful enough to threaten the balance of world peace. In conclusion i do not believe that isolationism would work in the world today, because countries rely on the products that other countries make and it would allow the rise of fascists or communist governments to take advantage of the absence of powerful countries and would grow in strength both militarily and financially. 1 year ago
