A soft drink contains an unknown amount of citric acid S6H8O7 which is triprotic acid. of 40.2 ml of 0.00621 M NaOH are required to tritrate 71.0 ml of the soft drink, what is the morality of the citric acid in the soft drink? How many grams of citric acid are in 100.0 ml of the soft drink?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Citric acid is C6H8O7, not S6H8O7 you are given volume and concentration for NaOH, you can find moles citric acid + NaOH --> salt + water being triprotic it'll need 3 moles of base for every mole of acid so citric acid + 3NaOH --> salt + 3 water you are given volume and moles of acid now, easy to find concentration after that it'll be straight plug for grams of citric acid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you say salt, mean NaCl?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i mean just a general salt, the specific salt is not important here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain how to do the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that giant paragraph i put in 1st reply isnt helpful at all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is. i know i have 3 moles of H2O but where do i go from there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no no, look at the mole ratio between the acid and the base

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a 1:1 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so citric acid + 3NaOH --> salt + 3 water look again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1:3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so you can find moles used in your titration for base, and with the mole ratio, find moles of acid
