My answers to Lab 2: A sampling experiment. Pick a random sample of 15 restaurants.
Random sample: McDonalds, Amber, Chef Chu, Armadillo Willys, Straits Cafe, Rice Thai, Floataway Cafe, Flying Biscuit, Mayfield bakery, Tawa, Joanies Kitchen, Palo Alto Bakery and Cafe, Printers Cafe, Hunan Kitchen
What method did you use to select the restaurants to ensure the selection was random?
Umm, I just thought of restaurants I knew. Should I have done something else?
One way to make a random sample of restaurants is as follows: 1. Make a list of all the restaurants in a city ensuring that the chosen city has a number of restaurants much greater than 15. 2. Assign a unique number to each restaurant. For example if there are 100 restaurants, number them 1 to 100. 3. Use a table of random numbers to select 15 restaurants. The above method is designed to ensure that each restaurant has an equal probability of being chosen, therefore meeting the requirement of a random selection.
