Write the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the line y = -2x - 8 and contains the point (4, 4).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in order for a line to be perpendicular to another line you must take the original line's slope and find it's opposite reciprocal the slope is -2 in this case. so 1/2 is the opposite reciprocal (flip it, and change the sign) then use the point-slope formula to find the line \[(y-y_1)=\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }(x-x_1)\] where \[(x_1,y_1)\] is \[(4,4)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the anwers will be 4,4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have 1/2x + 2 1/2x - 2 -1/2x+4 2x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[y=\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }x+2\] is the equation solved for y as I understand it you don't want the "answers" to be (4,4) you want the line to have the point (4,4) on it see the graph has the point (4,4) on it, so you're done

This question is not askng for a solution set as cosmonautics says. It's asking for a perpendicular line to the line you're given with the same point (4,4) * they give you the solution set. In otherwords your perpendicular line and line given intersect at (4,4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still think it wanted the line perpendicular to the given that contains (4,4).. I'm not sure where you're getting that the problem wants the lines to intersect at the point (4,4).
