9/14 - 1/7 ------------ 9/14 + 1/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find an LCD first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/7 is the same as 2/14 right? so now you can subtract the numbers with common denominators

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

yes it is

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

top and bottom?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

because the bottom is addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good observation

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

if i may ask i have 2 question 1st did u have to find the lcd? and 2nd do u find the lcd for addition part and add those instead of subtracting them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes you must find the lcd for all of the fractions present in the problem. Also, yes you add instead of subtracting in the denominator (there is an addition sign).

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

oh ok i thought u switch the sign for some reason i don't know why i thought that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's ok

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

and that give me 1 7 right because thats what the book says --- 25

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

or is that wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is not what I calculated, try it yourself before checking the book.

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

thank u so very much for all your help

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

u have a good night

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks you too. Did you figure it out?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

i figured out how to do it but now im confused on the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what answer did YOU get?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

well i haven't tried because i didnt know what to do so i just took the easy which i know i shouldn't have and looked in the book and said 1 7/25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure you are looking at the correct problem, because I got an answer that is not the same.

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

actually you are right i was looking at the wrong problem and i can't see the answer because its an even number problem

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

so i don't know what it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so let's do it now...

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

forgive me if i sound retarded and asking this but i just want to make sure i understand so for the first part is 1/7 - 2/14 or is it just 2/14?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you still have to keep the other fractions, you are just changing the fractions with denominators of 7. So what do you think is the new numerator?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

14?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not exactly, you keep 9/14 and you subtract a new fraction with the same denominator (14). How do you change 1/7 into a fraction with denominator 14?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

find a number that goes into both 7 and 14?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not exactly. maybe this will help...
