How can you sketch the graph of y = |x + 1|?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought the answer was translate the graph of y = |x| right one unit because it's positive, but that wasn't the answer ://

OpenStudy (epikrebel):

Is that absolute value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's actually translated to the left one unit instead of the right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, thank you. But why the left?

OpenStudy (epikrebel):

What number does x need to be for y=0?

OpenStudy (epikrebel):

y=|-1+1| y=0 (-1,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How'd you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like the -1 instead of x

OpenStudy (epikrebel):

x is the input for a graph we want to find the output of 0 which is where the x-axis will be. The only number that will make y=0 is -1 because |-1+1|=0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, duhhhh Lol. Thank you! (:
