What is the value of the coefficient "b" when the quadratic equation y = (2x + 1)(4x − 3) is written in standard form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Open the brackets and check the coefficients..

OpenStudy (phi):

do you use FOIL to multiply out? if so, the O and I terms added together give you the b coefficient: ax^2 + bx + c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure how to do it at all! :(

@phi please help!

This 5 min video is pretty clear http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/polynomials/v/multiplying-binomials It might be easier to watch it than try to follow an explanation written out here...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply it using foil and you get 8x^2-6x+4x -3 simplify 8x^2-2x-3 you b coefficient is -2 since the standard form is ax^2 + bx + c
