first of all it should be the length of the diameter, not the diameter

no it is a huge source of confusion
the side of a triangle is the side of a triangle, not the length of the side of a triangle
you can divide a diameter in two pieces if you like and each will have length half of the original length 

but another question is, what does "divide in half" mean?
it means the math teacher doesn't know math  imho
