@JakeV8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmmm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what have you read about the colony and the pirates?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

a little bit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or, to ask a different way, how did you come up with the ideas you have so far? Are they drawn from the actual journal entries, or is that mostly your original thoughts about pirates but phrased from the perspective of a colony member?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i think this assignment is completely ridiculous

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, sure :) that wouldn't make for a good response though :)

OpenStudy (aripotta):

no it wouldn't :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is this a straight American lit and writing class? Or are you supposed to also be learning about Calvinism. Like, is this just a topic for this particular writing assignment or a part of a larger study of Calvinism?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i got the ideas from here: http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/50493518e4b003bc1204546c :l

OpenStudy (aripotta):

this is english 3, not even a history class! which is one of the reasons why i think it's ridiculous

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ugh. well, for one thing, I wouldn't directly copy and paste... you can draw from what you've seen others write, but it's not a good practice to take others' sentences directly... especially if it looks like you just looked it up on yahoo answers or whatever.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

._. i know. but i don't know what to do!

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i need you jake.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe for your first paragraph, you can include some sentences to sort of "set the stage" of being in the colony. Something cheesy but realistic, like "An unfortunate situation began this afternoon, as three ships arrived in our harbor. At first, we did not suspect trouble, but we soon realized these were not peaceful travelers but pirates and men of war."

OpenStudy (aripotta):

:O did you just come up with that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and no. Yes, I just made it up, but I read a little of one of Bradford's entries where he mentions the pirates... but I didn't copy and paste, I just sort of read it and tried to think of how I might say something similar. This link is where I found the journal entry... click the link then search the page for "pirate" and you'll see it sort of near the bottom. http://www.pilgrimhall.org/PatentWarwick.htm

OpenStudy (aripotta):

I could also do this: Write a journal entry from the perspective of a lusty pirate. What say you to these stuffy Puritans? How is their Puritan lifestyle different from your pirate lifestyle? No pirate journal would be complete without some proper "pirate talk." Visit the Pirate Glossary to discover some common pirate terms. Select at least five of these terms to include in your entry. If you choose the pirate perspective, you must include five terms a pirate would have used in day-to-day conversation.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

so, be a pirate or puritan

OpenStudy (aripotta):

see how stupid this is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh? is that a different choice for the same assignment?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need to graduate already and get on to more productive learning ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just gotta get through this though... no other way to the goal.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

it's stupid though :( i don't like english

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Unless you are excited about trying to learn to talk like a pirate, I would stick with the first idea. Pirate talk might fun, but it would be more fun joking around with friends than trying to write that way for English.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i've been looking at this assignment for DAYS and ignoring it. i've actually been ignoring english since i requested the course, and now they're gonna kick me out..

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i need to turn some assignments in :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so anyway... :) make your first paragraph a "scene setter" with 6 sentences, but only introduce the arrival of the pirates toward the middle or end of the first paragraph. Then use paragraph 2 to talk about what shocks you the most. And then use paragraph 3 to answer the manners question. Also, it would be smart to use the last sentence of the first 2 paragraphs as a transition sentence.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it online through that WSU site?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

WSU? idk what that is. i go to FLVS :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's the site you linked me to with the Calvinism stuff. Apparently it's just a resource, not the class site. No big deal, just curious.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

oh ok. but yea, i need to get this done. i just don't know how to get 18 sentences without repeating myself

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i don't wanna do it. *slumps over in chair*
