A set of mugs costs $21.50. The sales-tax rate is 4.5 percent. What is the total amount you need to pay? You can use either method.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When something increases by 4.5 %, just multiply that item by .045 to get your solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That won't give you the total amount... that just gives you the amount of the tax.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Two ways you could work this: 1) Find the tax on $21.50 by multiplying 21.50 x 0.045. Then add the amount of the tax to 21.50 to get the total amount. 2) Multiply 21.50 x 1.045. This is like saying price + price*taxrate = total amount to pay 21.50 + 21.50(0.045) = total 21.50 (1 + 0.045) = total 21.50 (1.045) = total

$22.46 is the Select the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to round differently... I got 22.4675, so for dollars and cents, you would want to round to 2 decimal places... round to 22.47.

Does that method make sense to you? Either method works... they're really the same thing, just a little different order.
