Advanced Functions - TRIG help please!

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Find an equation of the form y = sin(x-p) whose graph passes through.... (pi/6,0)

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Pleaseeee help me ~~

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i know what it is asking, i just cant seem to think how to do it... all it wants you to do is change the parameters so that the x intercept is pi/6.... so to me all you are doing is shifting the graph to the right pi/6 units, the sine function starts off at the origin (0,0), but they want it to go through (pi/6, 0) so just move it to the right that many units..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all i would think is that the new equation is y=sin(x-(pi/6))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because, i believe that p value is the one that will shift the function left and right.

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did that make sense?

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Yeah, let me just think about it a little more. Your answer makes sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you think about all the sine functions in a form of y=a + bsin(k(x-c) the a will change your graph up and down the b will make it taller or shorter the k will make it wider or skinner the c will make it move right or left so in this case since you only have y=sin(x-p), the only paramater that you can change is the p value, or c in my example, which just moves it left or right, so if you put that value in, pi/6, you should get the graph there.

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

True!

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

I get it now :)) Thanks for your time

you are welcome.
