How do you write the set in roster form? In set builder notation? Suppose U = {–10, –6, –2, 0, 3, 5} is the universal set and T is the set {–10, –6, 0}. What is the complement of set T?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The complement of T is everything that is in U but not in T. U and T as given are in roster form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry, I don't know how to explain that any more clearly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well okay !!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well can you help me understand it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Only if you ask a more specific question than, "huh??" What, in particular, do you still not understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so how would i solve this problem ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you understand my explanation of what a 'complement' is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that would be t right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

T is a subset of U, i.e. T contains some but not all of the same elements as are in U. The complement is whatever is missing from T to *complete* set U.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

{–10, –6, 0) <-------- would that b it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is set T. The complement of T is everything in set U that is not in set T.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that would be incorrect >

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If T={–10, –6, 0}, then {–10, –6, 0} is not also the complement of T. Here's a simple example. Let's say the universal set only contains {1,2}, the complement of the subset, {1} is {2} because {1} ∩ {2} complete the universal set. Making more sense now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

{–6, –2, 0, 3, 5} or {–2, 3, 5}
