Answer the following questions given the bonding energy (kJ/mol) data: I-I:150 F-F:160 C-C:350 H-H:435 (a) Calculate the energy of the I-F bond. Express your answer in units of kJ/mol. (b) Calculate the % ionic character of the I-F bond.

You have the enthalpies of the I-I bond and the F-F bond, both of which are homonuclear. To find the heteronuclear bond enthalpy, I-F, you have you use the formula Professor Cima showed in the lecture. It is the geometric mean of the two homonuclear enthalpies + 96.3(difference of the two electronegativities)^2 The value you get is the correct answer, it is betwen 300 and 350 kJ/mol. b) % Ionic Character = 100(1-exp(-(difference in electronegativities)^2/4))) The value that you get should be between 30% and 35%
